Bolton''s ground is worth a visit. It''s very impressive from the outside. One of the most impressive in the country architecturally. Inside it is also impressive, and when Wanderers had a good spell, the sound (from only about 13,000 fans) was loud, retained presumably by the shape of the stands and roofs. The location of the ground is a disappointment. It is so removed from the town of Bolton that I imagine some fringe home fans can''t be bothered to go there when results are disappointing. The 1st half was disappointing, and a bit turgid for spells, with Pompey just about deserving of a 1-0 lead. Bolton came back quite strongly early in the 2nd half occasioning a double substitution by Jackett which steadied things down. Nevertheless the better chances thereafter still went to Bolton, who would have deserved a draw overall, if one had put one in. The best player on the pitch, and by some distance, was a weedy-looking 19 year old for Bolton, Ronan Darcy. He showed great touch and great confidence, always looking to take on opponents and make things happen. He played some excellent passes and retained the ball well under pressure even though he physically looked like a schoolboy in a man''s game. He also had a couple of good shots on goal when there appeared to be no opening. A future England player perhaps? His performance was worth the admission money. Pompey were over all disappointing. The middle of midfield didn''t really function very well. Naylor was poor, frequently losing possession. McGeehan didn''t impose himself. At the back, Raggett was wobbly, often appearing close to a costly error, but Burgess was very good, strongly heading out a barrage of crosses. The keeper, Bass, was also very good, making some very crucial saves. Harrison did pretty well, making life difficult for his markers, but Marquis was pretty dreadful. To me the man is a donkey. Hard-working but his touch is just not good enough. To be fair to him Jackett had him playing as a traditional #10, a role for which he doesn''t have the basic attributes. He was a bit better when he was moved up top when Harrison was taken off. If you''re going to play a tucked in #10 it needs to be someone a bit more skilful, a bit more savvy, and someone who can play cute passes in to the striker and have a decent shot himself, i.e. Ben Close, or possibly even Gareth Evans. Curtis was lively and played pretty well but didn''t see enough of the ball. Harness was OK, but tired after the interval and came off.
