1st game of the new season and was a really entertaining game to start with. Went on the way back home from holiday in Wales with Mum, Dad and Joseph. We left the holiday house at around 10:00 and drove to the ground the longer route in order to kill some time and make sure we didn't get there too early. We stopped just outside Stroud at around 12:30 in a Sainsbury's and had a drink and I streamed the 1st half of the Sutton game on my phone. We then left the Sainsbury's at about 13:20 and drove to the ground. We parked in the field opposite the ground and then went in to the ground. Is a really nice ground in a lovely area on top of a hill. As the club only sells vegan food we had lunch in the ground before KO. Sat just to the left of halfway in the main stand. Was a really good atmosphere for FGR's first game in the football league. First half, FGR dominated the game and ball and deserved to go into the break 2-0 as Barnet were pretty woeful. The 2nd half was a completely different affair and Barnet had almost all the possession and chances and FGR were pretty poor. Overall a draw was probably a fair result as it was a game of two halves and both sides being brilliant in one half and awful in the other. Started to drive home at about 17:20 and got in at 20:00.

A new season begins and what better place to start than at the League''s newcomers Forest Green Rovers. The New Lawn stadium is situated about 100 metres from their old ground In the Cotswold village of Nailsworth in Gloucestershire. I travelled by car and took a slightly different route which took me up a nice steep hill which commanded the most spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Unfortunately I didn''t get the opportunity to stop and take it all in but well worth a visit. This particular route took me down a very long and narrow country lane only really wide enough for one car at a time. Fortunately there were a few passing places but it took a while to drive down. Must check my route properly next time. At the end of this lane the New Lawn comes into view. Unless you have booked a parking space prior to your visit, parking seems to be on the street or in a school car park a few yards down the hill at a cost of £5. I parked up and the skies opened up. It rained so fiercely and for such a long time that it seemed FGR''s debut may well be cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch. However the rain stopped, the sun came out and everything was good. The first thing you see on the approach to the ground is the side view of the Main Stand with it''s green and black Union Jack painted on the wall proclaiming We Are FGR. An unusual sight but it''s all part of Forest Green''s well documented eco friendly agenda. The ticket office is also situated here and a marquee is set up behind the North stand for away fans. From the outside the New Lawn is mainly built of Cotswold stone (I''m guessing) with steel cladding above. It all looks a bit drab and sterile to be honest and there is little there to catch the eye. Situated at the back of the Main stand is the reception which leads to the executive boxes. Unusually there is no club shop as such and the only merchandise available are replica kits and programmes which are situated in a corner of the reception area. A few yards down from the reception is The Green Man - FGR''s home supporters bar. Very spacious and serving several real ales the bar also has a food outlet serving hot dogs, burgers etc. The main difference between FGR and other clubs food is that FG''s food is all vegetarian. Veggie burgers, veggie dogs, veggie curry. No meat available at the New Lawn, again part of their green beliefs so if you fancy a nice beefburger or sausage roll you''d be best off supplying your own or finding a local pub. At the back of the South stand are the changing rooms. This is where the team coaches turn up so if you want autographs make your way to the back of the South stand. Inside the ground are three seperate stands and a row of terracing. It is nicely compact and is dominated by the Main or East stand. A smart single tier with a cantilevered roof and a capacity of just under 2000 it has a row of executive boxes running along the back and four floodlight pylons on the roof. The seats are black with FGR spelled out in white seats. This stand has no windshields on either end and as the New Lawn sits at the top of a hill I should imagine it may be a bit exposed to the elements. At the north end of the ground is the Nympsfield Rd Stand, a covered home fans which straddles the goal but doesn''t go completely into the corners. Opposite is the South Stand. This is also a covered terrace and is home to the most vocal fans - The Green Army. Again this stand straddles the goal but doesn''t go all the way into the corners. On the Main Stand side is the groundsman''s area and on the other side, strangely, are the changing rooms. The away section of the ground, running the length of the pitch, is the West Terrace. This is an uncovered terrace with a capacity of around 1200. Its six or seven steps high and has 4 floodlight pylons running along the back. This terrace also houses the TV gantry. The game itself was entertaining enough with FGR going in at half time 2 - 0 up through 2 Christian Doidge goals in the last 5 minutes. The team and the fans must have thought the game was done and dusted. In the second half though Barnet got a foothold in the game and FGR were a bit sloppy. Maybe first game nerves or change of tactics? Eventually Barnet scored through Akpa-Akpro in the 58th minute and Campbell - Ryce equalised in the 63rd minute. Barnet''s Jack Taylor was sent off in stoppage time for a second yellow card. One amusing incident during the game came when some very grey and foreboding looking clouds began to gather above the New Lawn. The South Stand turned their attention to the completely exposed Barnet fans and sang Rain in a minute, it''s gonna rain in a minute. Fortunately for the Barnet faithful the rain held off. An enjoyable day all round and well worth a visit. Staff and locals all very friendly and helpful. A couple of minor gripes :- The no meat policy is all well and good but I think many fans, both home and away, may feel a little short changed by that. Certainly there weren''t too many fans in my section going for a burger a half time, which is unusual. Also the club shop needs to have its own room and offer a more varied range of merchandise. That of course is just my opinion. Just as an afterthought, on the journey back to the M5 we were held up for about 10 minutes due to a herd of cows on the road! They don''t move for anyone☺::: Aaah football in the countryside. //End of season : F G R finished 17th with 47 points Barnet were relegated to the National League after finishing 23rd on 46 points.//
