Folkestone Invicta’s unbeaten Ryman League Division One South start to the season came to an end when they were beaten 2-0 away to Dulwich Hamlet at the Champion Hill Stadium on Saturday afternoon when man of the match Erhun Oztumer scored both second half goals.
Turkish playmaker Oztumer, small in stature but rich in skill, was the star of the show as he produced a virtuoso performance and opened the scoring with a 25-yard screamer and then made the points safe from the penalty spot.
Dulwich emerged as comfortable winners as they turned on the style during the second half, but Invicta remain top of the table as results elsewhere went their way.
Invicta had never lost to Dulwich until last season when they were beaten three times by Gavin Rose’s side, including a play-off semi final defeat in south London.
And Dulwich came out on top again as Oztumer hit a spectacular 54th minute strike and then made it 2-0 with a 76th minute penalty after Nyren Clunis had been brought down by Invicta goalkeeper Jack Delo.
The Folkestone side had gone into the game with the fit again Roland Edge back in midfield in place of the unavailable Nat Blanks who had made his debut in the midweek draw at Ramsgate, with Richard Atkins again partnering Stuart King in attack..
And the visitors made a positive start as a fourth minute Ryan Philpott shot from outside the penalty area flashed narrowly past the post when the right back got forward and let fly.
Home goalkeeper Phil Wilson, himself back from injury, then got down to keep out a low eighth minute Atkins shot from the left hand side of the penalty area after a Darren Smith touch.
At the other end, Delo raced out to clear from Clunis after an Oztumer ball and a low 14th minute Ryan James shot was comfortably saved by Delo after an Ahmed Deen ball to Clunis on the left.
Smith and Darren Marsden then found King down the left hand side in the 18th minute and the striker shot into the side netting when he opted to go alone when Atkins was waiting in the middle.
Dulwich then began to create further chances as Clunis fired wide across goal from the left hand side in the 26th minute after an Ellis Green ball and assistant manager Junior Kadi let fly from distance but high and wide a minute later.
Oztumer then made room for himself on the half hour mark and his shot deflected off stretching Invicta centre half Frankie Chappell for the game’s first corner.
Kadi was booked for a rash 42nd minute challenge on James Everitt and then, in a bizarre incident, Dulwich substitute Luke Hickie was booked during first half stoppage time for comments made to an assistant referee whilst warming up on the sidelines as Clunis repeatedly found himself given offside.
Invicta were dealt a blow as midfielder Marsden did not come out for the second half after limping off at the interval to be replaced by Phil Stevenson.
Visiting captain Liam Friend was booked for a heavy 48th minute challenge on Oztumer, but the second half was to belong to the Turk.
Edge swopped passes with King a minute later and chipped to the far post where a Smith header was clawed round the post by goalkeeper Wilson but Invicta were denied their first corner of the game by an assistant referee’s flag for offside.
An Oztumer shot was deflected for a corner and the ball came off Chappell and into Delo’s hands when Green drove the ball across from the right.
And Dulwich broke the deadlock when Peter Adeniyi found OZTUMER and the little midfielder produce something special when his long range shot swerved and dipped into the corner of the net.
Oztumer produced some more magic a minute later when he played an inviting ball across goal from deep on the left hand side but no one was there in the middle to provide the decisive touch and a James shot was blocked by Liam Dickson when Kalvin Morath-Gibbs got clear down the right.
Dulwich were now well on top and Clunis headed wide in the 59th minute after good work from Green down the left.
Oztumer was pulling the strings and with his confidence well and truly up he attempted an audacious 40-yard chip that had Delo back peddling when he got clear again in midfield in the 62nd minute.
A Clunis shot then flashed past the post when James played the ball back two minutes later.
The second goal came when James held the ball up around the halfway line and played Clunis through. Defenders Friend and Chappell got back to block but Clunis went down under challenge from Delo and referee Casimir Nzenga awarded a penalty on direction from one of his assistants.
OZTUMER stepped up and made it 2-0 in typically confident style.
Delo got down to save a low Dean Carpenter shot when the substitute received the ball from Clunis with that man Oztumer just unable to divert the ball past the goalkeeper.
Calaum Martin shot over when fellow substitute Carpenter played an 82nd minute ball into James and Delo got across to keep out a Carpenter shot a minute later after a flowing Dulwich passing move and Delo then pushed a James shot out for a corner.
Invicta had a late chance during stoppage time but Wilson kept out an Everitt header at point blank range at the expense of a corner after a King free kick following a foul by Morath-Gibbs on Atkins.
DULWICH HAMLET: Wilson, Morath-Gibbs, Deen, Adeniyi, Turner, Gonsalves, Clunis, Kadi (Carpenter 62 mins), R James, Oztumer (Hickie 83 mins), Green (Martin 79 mins). Unused subs: Weston, Samuels.
