Rovers appear to be jinxed with cup draws so much so that i could have predicted this one and don''t bother listening to the draw anymore. Personally all i want at this stage is a new ground or to see us play a new team but with the round regionalised we drew the joint highest northern placed team for the second year running after Lincoln this time last year. This extends to the FA trophy going out at the first stage to Wrexham in 2015/16. I remember losing count in the 90''s how many times we were paired with Blackpool and Oxford and even when we got to the quarter finals back in 2004 our duck looked sure to be beaten with both Arsenal(only one meeting in 1973) and Man United(one meeting in 1976) left in the draw we got Millwall! The rare exception came in the late 90''s and 2000 when we played Southampton for the first time since 1963 and Everton for the first time since 1968. But as we slid down the leagues and had to enter at the first round stage for the first time in over a decade it was more of the same as we had to play cardiff.
Anyway back to the game in hand and history wasn''t on our side as Barrow had been victourious on both our previous cup meetings, once in the 50''s and again in the 60''s and with Barrow unbeaten on their own soil this season. The coach journey up passed through wet and windy weather but on arrival the sun was cracking the flags, so much so that most rovers fans spent the entire match cupping their hands over their eyes, At least the pitch was green this year although looked far from a bowling green. The game itself was very ugly with both sides set up for a physical encounter and the ball in the air for long periods(hoof) with Barrow winning most of the battles added to this rovers passing in the first half harked back to last season and a number of sloppy unenforced errors with possession given away usually for throw ins with passes ten yards astray. From my point of view the opening goal was highly controversial with ridehalgh standing still a barrow players boot(laces appeared to get tangled) with his, he made no upper body movement whilst the home player attempted to brake free but was deemed to have fouled and from the resulting free kick into the box barrow scored. Rovers equaliser had more than a degree of fortune about it a high ball into the box must have been lost in the sun and Diarra(ironically pictured on the front of the programme receiving last months player of the month award)standing on the penalty spot back headed the ball over his stranded keeper for an og. The second half saw the rovers rearguard so impressive so far this season in disarray with a number of hesitations with no one wanting to take responsibility gifting barrow chances, this also led to cook and duggan having a verbal confrontation and ultimatley led to the winning goal as a cutback into no mans land just outside the area left both sides with an equal distance to the ball but as rovers defence remained static turnbull latched onto it and fired a low shot unapposed into the bottom right of davies goal. A late substite stephenson saw rovers first shot on target a few minutes from time. In summary it was a poor physical game with little quality, the home side were worthy winners with tranmere''s performance being inept and dire in the extreme.
