On the day that Donald J Trump was elected and we had the first snowfall of the winter, I drove to Grimsby after work. Well Cleethorpes really - where the Mariners play next to the North sea. It was a freezing cold night with fog rolling in and a tiny crowd to watch the absolutely unmissable powerhouse event of the Checkatrade EFL Trophy Northern Group A match between Grimsby and the Blades. How could they stay away? Officially 179 from Sheffield (but 180 if you count me stood in the home end). Blundell Park is a nice little ground (all seater which surprised me) and the pitch was very good too, despite the huge undulation in the box at the home end. Decent game of football played at pace with 6 goals and plenty of action. Good chips, peas and scraps pre match. And the bizarre sight of lit up ships sailing past on the North Sea during the game. Despite the total lack of glamour this was a much better way to finish the 92 than earlier in the year at Chelsea. Proper, honest, grass roots football instead of commercial, money grabbing sh1te. I know which I prefer.
