GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Wednesday FC moved to Owlerton from the Olive Grove in 1899 and re-installed the stand from their former ground on the north side of the new enclosure. Another roof was added to the front of this building, to cover the paddock, and other facilities included shallow banking around the ground, a cover over part of the west end and by 1905 a small stand had been provided on the south side of the pitch.

Just prior to WWI the name of the ground changed to Hillsborough and the venue was considerable altered with the construction of a large embankment at the east end and the opening of a new 5,600 seat main stand on the south side giving a new nominal capacity of 50,000. Following further alterations in the 1920s, the expansion and covering of the west end and installation of a new stand in the north west corner, the capacity increased and the record attendance of 72,841 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Manchester City (2-2) on February 17th, 1934.
The ground remained virtually unaltered until 1961 when the original stand on the north side was demolished and replaced by the largest cantilever stand built in Britain to that date with 9,882 seats. In the same decade, a new 4,465 seat two-tier stand was constructed at the west end and a new cover installed at the east end in 1986. Hillsborough was subsequently made an all-seater with the installation of seats on re-profiled terracing around the ground and the capacity, at the start of season 2007/8, was 39,859 with an 115 x 75 yards sized pitch.
