GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Carlisle United FC, having moved from Devonshire Park, opened Brunton Park in September 1909. The facilities at that time consisting of a main stand and embankments, and by the early 1920s terracing had been constructed in front of the stand and at the south end. On their election to the Football League in 1928 the site was purchased for Ł2,000 and the ground further improved with an extension to the main stand and erection of a cover on the east side.

Following a fire in the previous year, a new main stand was built in 1954 (and extended in 1971) whilst further improvements included covering the south end in 1965 and the building of a new all seated stand on the east side in 1996. (Constructed so as to allow for the planned northwards expansion of the ground).
The record attendance of 27,603 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Middlesbrough (1-2) on February 7th, 1970 and the capacity at the end of the 2006/7 season was 16,981 with 6,433 seats. The pitch size was 117 x 72 yards.
