GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Also known as Upton Park, the site was a cabbage patch when West Ham United FC moved here from The Memorial Ground in 1904. On opening the facilities included a main stand on the west side, a pavilion in the south west corner and embankments around the remainder of the pitch. Further improvements were made just prior to WWI with the building of a new main stand on the west side, installation of a cover on the east side and construction of terracing at each end.

The main stand was replaced yet again in 1925, this time with a double-deck structure, whilst the roof of the original stand was reinstalled at the south end. No further changes took place until the 1960s when a roof was installed at the north end, the stand on the west side extended and a new 3,490 two-tier cantilever roofed stand built on the east side.

In 1981 seats were installed in the west side paddock and during the 1990s the club purchased land behind the west side and the ground was made all-seater with the installation of seats on the east side and the construction of two-tier stands at each end. The west stand was demolished in 2001 and a new 15,000 seat stand constructed further back on the additional land on that side giving the opportunity to widen the pitch. In 2002 the pitch was raised by 4in and the first six rows of seats removed from the stand at the south end giving a capacity at the start of the 2007/8 season of 35,647. The pitch size was 112 x 72 yards.
