GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

West Bromwich Albion FC moved to The Hawthorns from Stoney Lane in 1900 and re-erected the stand from their former ground on the east side whilst other facilities on opening included a new 5,000 seat main stand on the west side and embankments at each end. The freehold was purchased for Ł5,350 in 1913 and alterations that took place prior to WWI included the installation of a cover at the south end, the roofing and expansion of the banking on the east side (following the destruction of the stand by a fire in 1904) and refurbishment of the main stand.

Further improvements in the inter-war years included the installation of concrete terracing around the ground, an extension to the stand on the east side, the building of a 750 seat stand in the south west corner and the rebuilding of the main stand roof. The record attendance of 64,815 was set during this period at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Arsenal (3-1) on March 6th, 1937
No further alterations took place until the 1950s when a stand was built in the north west corner and in 1964 the east side cover was removed to the north end and replaced by a 4,300 seat stand, the paddock of which was converted to all seats in 1976. A new 4,150 seat main stand was constructed on the west side in 1981 and, after re-roofing in 1985, the terrace at the south end demolished and replaced with a 5,755 seat stand in 1994. In the same year an 8,234 seat structure opened at the north end and, in 2001 the stand on the east side was demolished and replaced with a new 8,000 seat structure giving an all-seat capacity of 28,000 at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 115 x 74 yards.
