In use as a recreation ground when purchased in 1907 by the Huddersfield Association Football Ground Co., Huddersfield Town AFC used the venue from their formation in 1908. Initially there were virtually no facilities as such with the pitch running north-south and parallel to Leeds Road but by the time of their admission into the Football League in 1910 the ground had been transformed. The pitch was turned through 90o, a new 4,000 seat main stand built on the south side, a cover installed at the west end and terracing constructed around the pitch giving a nominal capacity of 32,000.
In the 1920s a new roof was installed over the west end and, in the wake of extensive rebuilding and expansion of the terracing, the record attendance of 67,037 was set at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Arsenal (0-1) on February 27th, 1932. Following the end of WWII, the ground remained unaltered until the main stand was destroyed by a fire on April 3rd, 1950. The replacement opened for the following season and it was probably around this time, and due to the same fire, that the west end roof was also replaced.
The final improvement before Huddersfield Town moved to the new and adjacent Alfred McAlpine Stadium in 1994 was the installation of a cover over the north side in 1955. The site was subsequently sold and redeveloped as a retail park accommodating what was claimed to be the largest DIY superstore in Europe.
