When Southport Central FC moved from Scarisbrook New Road to Ash Lane in 1905 a timber seated stand was removed from the old ground and re-erected and extended on the north side of the new venue. The thoroughfare and ground were re-named as Haig Avenue in 1921, Southport FCβs debut season in the Football League, and a new covered enclosure added on the south side of the pitch. Subsequent improvements included extending the covered enclosure around the west side and the installation of some concrete terracing giving a ground capacity of some 30,000. The record attendance of 20,111 was subsequently set at the FA Cup 4th Round Replay v. Newcastle United (1-1) on January 26th, 1932.
In 1966 the main stand burned down and a new 200 seat structure was subsequently erected in its place and although Southport FC dropped out of the League in 1978, the ground is still utilized for their home games.
