GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Located to the north of the town, Southend Stadium was built on the site of a former brickworks and opened on May 19th, 1933. It was developed as a dual purpose venue with an oval track for greyhound racing disposed around a 112 x 72 yards sized football pitch. On opening, the facilities included a 2,000 seat covered stand on the west side with a large concreted terrace on the east side and narrow terracing at each end. Within a year a cover had been erected over the east side and the all-time record attendance of 22,862 was set at the FA Cup 3rd Round replay with Tottenham Hotspur (1-2) on January 15th, 1936. Southend United FC moved to Roots Hall in 1955 and the venue continued in use as a Greyhound Stadium until it was demolished in 1985. The site is now occupied by a Currys Superstore on Greyhound Way.
