GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Northolme, as a cricketing venue, dates back to the 1850s and was first used by Gainsborough Trinity FC in 1884. Located to the north of the town centre, the only covered accommodation at this time was a small shelter in the south west corner of the ground. For many years the players changed in the nearby Sun Inn where an extension was built for the exclusive use of the football club.

Later improvements included the building of a 200 seat grandstand (replaced in 1910) on the south side, a new enclosure fence and a covered standing enclosure on the north side. No further changes were made to the facilities during their existence as a Football League club but, following the destruction by fire of the stand and the covering over the enclosure in the 1940s a new grandstand was built on the north side and other improvements made. The venue is still in use as the home ground for Gainsborough Trinity FC.
