GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Opened in 1891, the ground was in use by Stockport Rugby Club when Stockport County FC moved in from Green Lane in 1902 but within a year the football club became sole tenants when the rugby club folded. A cover was installed on the south side in 1903, a new main stand constructed on the north side in 1913 and, by the 1920s a cover had been erected at the west end and an open seated stand built at the east. The final pre-WWII alteration occurred in 1935 when the main stand was destroyed by a fire and replaced in 1936 by a 2,000 seater.

The record attendance of 27,833 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Liverpool (1-2) on February 11th, 1950 and early post war improvements included the extension of the cover on the south side. From 1978 safety measures resulted in drastic reductions in accommodation; the rear section of the south side terrace and the west stand were demolished, the east end terrace reduced in height and the paddock in front of the main stand closed, resulting in a nominal capacity of only 6,000 with 1,840 seats.
Major improvements took place in the 1990s with the installation of 2,411 seats and refurbishment of the south side stand and construction of a new 4,800 seat stand at the west end. 1,300 seats were subsequently installed on the terraces at the east end and at the start of the 2004/5 season the all-seat capacity was 11,000 and the pitch size 111 x 71 yards.
