GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Torquay Athletic RUFC established the venue at Plainmoor but moved out in 1905 to be replaced by Ellacombe FC. Torquay United FC moved in and merged with Ellacombe to form Torquay Town FC in 1910 and in 1921 merged with Babbacombe FC to form Torquay United FC and joined the Football League six years later.

The facilities at this time included banking on the west side, a main stand, purchased from Buckfastleigh Racecourse, on the east side and by 1933 a cover had been built at the south end. The only other alterations prior to the construction of a cover on the west side in the early 1950s was the installation of terracing around the ground.
Following the establishment of the record attendance of 21,908 at the FA Cup 4th Round tie v. Huddersfield Town (0-1) on January 29th, 1955 the main stand (later rebuilt following a partial fire in 1985) was extended and a cantilever roof subsequently built over part of the south end. The south end was rebuilt in the 1990s with a 1,275 seat stand, a new cover installed on the west side and the capacity at the start of the 2004/5 season was 6,283 with 2,446 seats. The pitch size was 112 x 74 yards.
