GROUND HISTORY

Constructed on a brownfield site formerly occupied by the Bradford Iron Works and Beswick Goods Station this venue originally opened for the Commonwealth Games on July 25th, 2002. It consisted of two tier stands on each side and a single tier stand at the south end with a continuous cantilevered roof. To accommodate the extra length of the athletics arena, three open seated temporary stands were installed at the north end giving an all-seat capacity of 38,000.
Following the completion of the event on August 4th, 2002, the running track was removed and the three stands at the north end demolished. The playing area was lowered by 16ft to accommodate a lower tier of seats throughout the stadium and the north end was reconstructed in similar fashion to the south. In its rebuilt form the stadium became a 48,000 seater with a continuous cantilevered roof and the first match to be played here was a friendly v. Barcelona (2-1) (36,518) on August 10th, 2003. The record attendance of 47,500 was set at the UEFA Cup Final between Zenit St Petersburg and Rangers (2-0) on May 14th, 2008. The pitch size was 118 x 76 yards.

- Walk up 200 yards up Piccadilly and drop in at the Piccadilly Tavern at 60 - 75 Piccadilly friendly bar is the perfect spot before going to either ground in Manchester and with generously portioned food plus wide range of beers.

- North/South
Leave the M6 at Junction 19 and (take the first exit from the North and Third from the South) then follow the A556 towards Stockport and then join the M56 at Junction 8 taking the third exit on to it and going towards Stockport. Continue onto the M60 heading on towards Ashton under Lyne. Then leave the M60 at Junction 23 and take the A635 towards Manchester. Take the second on the right onto Ashton New Road towards Droylsden and stay on the road for around three miles and you will reach the Stadium on your right.
West/East
Leave the M62 at Junction 18 and then join the M60 then leave the M60 at Junction 23 and take the third exit at the roundabout following the signs for the A635 towards Manchester. Then take second on the right onto Ashton New Road towards Droylsden/Manchester. Stay on the A662 for around three miles and you will reach the Stadium on your right.
- Public transport
- The closest train station is Ashburys which is a short five minute train ride away from Manchester Piccadilly Station. The stadium is about a 15 minute walk away from Ashburys station. As you come out of the station turn left on to Alan Turning Way keep straight on at the junction and after proceeding up the road you will come to the stadium on your left.
The ground is a 20 minute walk from Piccadilly Station to the stadium. At the bottom of the main station on London Road approach turn left into Store Street. At the end of the road turn right onto Great Ancoats Street. Cross over the road, then the canal and turn left into Pollard Street continue straight along Pollard Street which leads onto the A662 Ashton New Road and you will come to the stadium on your left.
There are normal bus service and special match day buses leave from the right hand side of the square in Piccadilly which Manchester City Centre, Lever St/Warwick St Stop EM. 216 and 217 the main service buses, but the 185, 186, 230, 231, 232, 233, 234, 235, 236, 237, X36 and X37 also go from the city centre to the stadium On the return, the special buses leave from Ashton New Road just across from the away end.
There is a new metro stop just 10 minutes from the ground and you get it from the City Centre on the East Manchester Metro line. From Platform 1 outside Piccadilly Rail Station take the tram for Bury and this will drop you of at Sports City and its 10 minutes walk to the ground.

Parking:
We parked approximately 10 mins walk away from the ground as there are parking restrictions around the stadium.
There are plenty of Β£5.00 private car parks but street parking is available if you are eagle eyed.
Eating:
I always avoid purchasing in the ground as too expensive especially when you have kids.
There is a big Asda across the road with all your requirements, plus a Mcdonalds next door.
Opposite the ground there is also a couple of local fish & chip shops.
Drinking:
If i remember correctly tea was about Β£2.00 and soft drinks the same.
General comments:
Look out for ticket offers on the City website.
