The club was elected into the Football League Division 3 [S] in 1923 as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic and changed the name to AFC Bournemouth in 1971. In 2001, as the conversion of the ground to the Fitness First Stadium had not been completed, eight matches at the start of the season were played at the Avenue Stadium of Dorchester Town FC. The fastest ever League hat-trick was scored here in 2 mins 20 secs by James Hayter for AFC Bournemouth v. Wrexham (6-0) on February 24th, 2004. The club was also involved in a Football League Play Off Match at the neutral venue of the Millennium Stadium.
