GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Everton FC vacated Anfield in 1892 and moved to a plot of land in nearby Mere Green that they had purchased for £8,090. When the ground (now known as Goodison Park) opened later that year it was considered to be one of the finest in Britain with two 4,000 seat open stands, a 3,000 seat covered stand and an open bank on the west side amongst the facilities. Within four years a cover had been installed at the rear of the west side and a new stand constructed on the east side.

The ground saw more major redevelopment during the early part of the 20thC with the opening of two-tier stands on the west side and at the north end prior to WWI and two-tier stands on the other two sides in the 1920s. Goodison Park then remained virtually unchanged until 1970 when the main stand, on the west side, was demolished and replaced with a three tier 10,045 seat structure. The ground was gradually made all-seater with the construction of a new stand at the south end and the introduction of seating throughout the refurbished and re-roofed east and north stands. The all-seat capacity at the start of the 2007/8 season was 40,569 and the pitch size 112 x 78 yards.
