For the only time in my match going travels, a friend and I decided we''d hitch to this 3rd Round FA Cup tie in Plymouth from West London, leaving on Friday. We got lifts in a couple of cars to near Bristol and stayed with friends in Caldicot. On Saturday, from the M5 services near Bristol, we were picked up by a Rolls (!) - the owner having travelled from a party somewhere. He dropped us near Taunton, where our luck ran out. No cars would stop, and a police patrol pestered us assuming we had drugs on us. In the end we ran into Taunton and caught a train to Plymouth. The match was played in a gale. Plymouth, with the wind behind them, peppered Charlton, whose goal led a charmed life. Somehow only one Plymouth goal was scored in the first half. Roles were somewhat reversed in the second half, and Charlton scored twice to win the game - one direct from a corner, the ball blowing in on the gale. The journey home was much simpler - we just got on the football special with hundreds of other Charlton fans.
