Brighton were outclassed as Southend all but ended their play off hopes with a desrved 2-0 victory. The hosts dominated the first half, and scored two goals to all but kill the game. An improved performance from the visitors in the second half saw Brighton throw everything at The Shrimpers in an attempt to keep the season alive, however they were unable to break down a superior side.   A dissapointing night at Roots Hall. A few days earlier Brighton had shot themselves in the foot by losing in a torrid display to bottom side Port Vale, but tonight they were beaten by superior opposition and although it ended the play off dreams this had still been an exciting season.   The Brighton fans were excellent in the match, making much noise throughout even when their side looked dead and buried, helped by the barrel roof design of the away end. Southend fans also helped contribute to a lively atmosphere. A great ground to visit, just a shame about the result!
