The FA took revenge on Ken Bates'' efforts to swallow up a 10 point deficit at the end of the previous season by giving Leeds an enirely unfair further 15 points penalty this season for contrived reasons. They would have been delighted then that this was all that prevented Leeds from winning automatic promotion at the end of their first season down.
