Match no. 1177. The final round of games in the regular League One season. MKD went into the game in 3rd place, one point behind Preston and so needing to better PNE''s result away to relegation-threatened Colchester to claim the second automatic promotion place. In the event MKD swept already relegated Yeovil aside and were 4-0 ahead by half-time. The whole of the second-half was spent with the crowd anxiously trying to get changes from the Preston game which stood at 0-0. A huge cheer greeted news that Colchester had been awarded a penalty, only for them to miss it. With about 10 minutes to go the news that Colchester had now definitely scored was greeted with a huge roar to eventually be followed by confirmation that PNE had indeed lost and MKD had won promotion to the Championship for the first time after just 11 years in existence. This was the 300th game my son and I attended together. 40 years ago today: Match no. 339 - West Ham 2-0 Fulham (FA Cup Final) - 3.5.1975.
