Match no. 78. A great performance from the Hammers who were already 3-0 ahead when the referee had to go off the pitch for the last 15 minutes of the first-half. This meant the senior linesman took over with a volunteer from the crowd (a Mr McLean - apparently a qualified ref) running the line. Unfortunately during this spell Trevor Brooking scored a goal that Burnley were convinced was a long way offside. As the Newham Recorder subsequently put it, Mr McLean''s flag remained smartly by his civilian trousers and the goal stood!
