Match no. 593. A minute''s silence was held just before kick-off in memory of the victims of the Bradford City stadium fire which had happened the previous Saturday. I was stood on the East Terrace and when silence descended all I could hear was the click-click-click of the turnstiles as people continued to enter the ground. With 2 games left to play Stoke stood on 17 points, 23 adrift of the two teams immediately above them, having been doomed to relegation for weeks. West Ham were still not safe themselves but this win helped them to eventually finish in 16th place. I counted the diehard Stoke fans in the cordoned off section of the South Bank - there were 27 of them.
