I had just moved to Maxwell Road in Fulham with Fay, sharing with Alisdair Chisholm and several ''others'' it always seemed. Stamford Bridge was a three minute walk from the flat! This was my first visit of what would become several during that season. It re-ignited my enthusiasm for Chelsea which I had had when I was an 8-10 year old and since lost again of course! Chelsea were highly fancied for the fixture but that was because nobody realised the gem that Watford had in their ranks. John Barnes didn''t even feature in the opposition team profiles in the programme but I remember being instantly struck by how electric and skilled he was but he also struck me as a humble player, probably because he was black and had only recently been ''found'' playing football in a London park somewhere. A player who had slipped through the conventional coaching system and made it on sheer talent alone.
