Overview
A nice set of cards in the style of the popular Barrett and Bassett sets given away with sweet cigarettes. Some images are taken from similar sets but the drawings are all of a good quality and likeness of the player.
The front of each card is a colour portrait of the player in their team colours, and a club crest. Ironically, given the name of the set, several of the players are sporting the colours of a different club to the one mentioned on the back. This is presumably due to players moving club and the artist not having time to change the card before going to press.
The back of each card is a composite of a template frame featuring the name and address of the company and set, and then the player's name, team and card number slotted in.
Cards fromthe set sell for around £1 each and a full set can fetch between £30 and £50 depending on the condition.

Gerry Hitchens was one of the few English players to have a successful career abroad. Hitchens had moved from Aston Villa to Inter Milan in 1961 where he scored 17 goals in 39 games. He then moved to Torino in 1962 where he scored 28 in 89 appearances. He stayed in Italy until 1969 when he returned to play for Worcester City and then Merthyr Tydfil.
The artist clearly didn't have a Torino crest to hand so went with the three lions instead. |

Several players were in the shirt of their previous club and with the previous club's crest.
For example, Billy McAdams had left Leeds for Brentford between the portrait being drawn and the copy being written for the back, and likewise Gerry Baker had left Man City for Hibs by the time the set appeared.
Andy Malcolm had left First Division Chesea for Brentford.
Conversley, freescoring Colin Booth had left Nottingham Forest for Doncaster with the back of the card noting he had been placed on the transfer list and the artwork reflecting his new club. Perhaps the copy was written while the artist was still working through the portraits from 1 to 50 so in this case he was able to reflect the new club. |
