Only one game had been staged at Stonebridge Road, back in 1961 when Gillingham fans had been naughty. The club was forced to play Wrexham at Gravesend.
As there were rumours of a possible ground move I decided to go. It turned out to be a most enjoyable day. Perhaps the hightlight was a chat with an ex-groundsman. I had noticed that the perimeter wall at both ends was not parrallel to the touchline. He explained that when he took over he gained the impression that the pitch was out of square. The chairman had a friend with a light aircraft who took an aerial view proving the groundsman's theory.
The ground itself is somewhat old-fashioned, but all the more pleasing for that.
