A sunny warm (21C) day is forecast as Eve drives me to Bromley South for the 6.50 to Vic, Circle to Paddington, and the 7.45 to Newport (43002). (Super Saver fare of £15.20 return) Arr Newport 9.30,then 10.05 Man Picc service to Hereford, (175111) arr 10.53, to be met by Aubrey & Lynne, who are weekending here for a railway event organised by the Branch Line Society at Moreton on Lugg. We drive to their B&B,Alberta House, Newtown Road which looks smart and presentable. We walk into town Lunch in a bistro/bar down an alley of Commercial St, then tour the cathedral, but A&L aren''t keen on the £6 entry to the Mappa Mundi exhibition. We part at 13.00 they to meet friends also here for the BLS event, me to explore some more. Down Gwynne St, (where Nell was born) across the Wye bridge, for a swift half of Red Dragon(£1.25) at the Saracens Head and sit outside by the river. Continuing beside the river to Bishops Meadow, across the Victoria footbridge, Castle Green and back to Edgar Street for the match. I sat in the Main stand (where the players tunnel is) at the back near the press box, and a short distance from the local radio commentator keeping up a constant description of play. Both teams played attractive football, trying to retain possession and build attacks. Hereford scored from a fine cross from the left wing in 11mins, and led by that goal at half time. Early in the second half Chesterfield hit the post, and 2 late long range shots by Hereford sealed the win. An enjoyable game against the odds as Ch. are 10 points clear at the top. A pint of Wainwright (£1.65 less 50p voucher in Wetherspoons Kings Fee) 17.51 (175009) to Newport, 18.44, to Bristol TM, 19.30 (43146) to Padd. Home 22.20. (629 away supporters)
