Arsenal | 1 Sep 1890 | 31 May 1893 | The Invicta Ground saw a marked change in football in the South of England when Arsenal became the first Southern club to go professional in 1891. The ground itself was probably the best in the south at that time with a grandstand and terracing surrounding a decent pitch. The club was shunned by other Southern clubs but their application to join the League in 1893 was successful and they never looked back. Unfortunately, the landord of the Invicta Ground increased the rent from Β£200 to Β£350, resulting in the club moving back to Manor Field, which they bought for Β£4,000. Their last game at the Invicta was on 29th April 1893 when they lost 1-0 to Stoke City. | |
