GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Located in the Bedminster district of the city, Bristol South End FC moved in in 1894. Being overlooked by a hill one of the first priorities was to erect screening to prevent a free view of the matches and this was done by employing a system of tall posts and pulleys to raise and lower large sheets of canvas as and when required. The facilities included a 500 seat stand on the west side of the pitch and embankments, which were subsequently raised, at each end of the pitch.

The record attendance of 17,909 was set at the FA Cup 1st Round tie v. Sheffield United (1-3) on February 6th, 1904. The club, having merged with Bedminster FC in 1901 and now called Bristol City FC, moved to Ashton Gate, the former home ground of Bedminster, in 1904. St John’s Lane, albeit somewhat altered, was still used as a sports ground until 2003 when it was redeveloped as a housing estate.
