Constructed in 2001 on the site of a former gas works the 32,689 seat capacity Friends Provident St Mary’s Stadium (to give it its full title in 2002) is composed of a continuous single tier of seats with a continuous cantilevered roof. An attendance of 32,095 was recorded at the England v. Macedonia European Championship Group Match (2-2) on October 16th, 2002. The pitch size was 112 x 74 yards.

Food & drink: King Alfred 51 Northam Road is neutrals and away fans only and there is a very good selection of wines beer and food and is close to the ground.
If driving: From the M3 take Junction 14 and follow the A33 into Southampton. Continue on the A33 until you reach the junction with the A3024 Northam Road and turn left onto this road towards Northam. Then turn right onto Britannia Road for the stadium.

Like the old ground there is not a lot of parking in fact its non existence for away or neutrals means you have to look for a place to park the car so I ignore the above directions and Park at the Ocean Village which costs £4.00 by taking the M27 to junction 7, signposted to Southampton and Bittern, follow the A334, which turns in to the A3024, continue over the bridge over the Solent. At the main junction with traffic lights, turn left on to Kingsway/St Mary’s Place marked “Docks” then continue past the park on your right and then the road bends round to the left into a one way system. Stay in the right hand lane and do not take the left hand turning to go over the bridge, continue straight over the next set of traffic lights, marked “Docks”.

At the end of this road, turn immediately left at the next junction (signed Ocean Village and Woolston) then follow the road over the train tracks/crossing and go straight over the first set of traffic lights and turn right at the second set of traffic lights into Ocean Way the main entrance to Ocean Village

The road goes past a Tesco Express on the left and the Cineworld cinema on the right before bending round to the right with parking is available either in the surface car park straight ahead or in the new multi-storey Ocean Car Park then it’s a 14 minute walk to the ground you just walk up Bridle Place to the end turn right onto Marine Parade and the ground is on the left and parking here means you miss out on the grid lock and are home a lot earlier.
Public transport: Unlike the old ground St Mary’s is a nice walk from the railway Station and the local council have signposted the way. The stadium is located around one and a half miles away from Southampton station it’s a 27 minutes to walk. There is also a shuttle bus in operation from the Blechynden Terrace bus stop outside the station to the ground.

The normal route I take to the ground is to go onto Blechynden Terrace then walk up to the road till it changes to West Park Road then straight on to Commercial Street and stop the Ye Cat Pub on Arts and Bar Road then take the next left into New Road and walk across a beautiful park till you hit the junction walk across the junction into what become Northman Road.

At the next junction take a right and at the end of the street take a left and take a pint in the King Alfred then follow it back on to Northman Road and follow the road till the footbridge then cross the footbridge over the railway line and the stadium is in front of you
