GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Originally known as the Athletic Ground when opened in 1896 by Oldham County FC it was occupied by them until their demise in 1899. In the same year Pine Villa FC moved in from Pine Mill, changed the name of the club to Oldham Athletic FC but moved out to Hudson Fold after only a season.  In the period before they returned to the ground in 1906 it was used by other clubs, principally Werneth FC.

By this time the ground possessed a main stand (replaced in 1913) on the south side and upon their election to the Football League one year later, another stand had been built on the north side of the pitch. Later improvements included the installation of a cover at the west end in 1928 and the record attendance of 47,671 was set at the FA Cup 4th Round tie v. Sheffield Wednesday (3-4) on January 25th, 1930.

Improvements in 1971 saw the replacement of the north stand with a covered seated stand fronted by an uncovered seated paddock, whilst in the 1990s the west end stand was refurbished and installed with seats and a new seated stand built at the east end giving an all-seated capacity of 13,624 at the start of season 2007/8. The pitch size was 110 x 74 yards.
