Godfrey Phillips tobacco company started issuing cards with their cigarettes in 1904. The company had been in existence since 1844 and was one of the first to issue cards.
They were responsible for two of the largest sets, which were produced for them by Pinnace. The 1920 set of black and white photos of players contained 1,100 cards whilst the 1922 set contained 2,462! The 1923 set contained 940 and it is rare to find a complete collection of any of these.
As colour portraits became more popular, Phillips produced two sets of 50 in 1936 and a further set in 1937.
