Good little midweek trip. Picked Craig up and headed to the pub round the corner for a quick feed. 2 Meals for £9 not bad.
Made the journey to Newmarket which took around 40 mins from Ipswich. Parked along a side street and made our way in. Ely had the opportunity to go top and Newmarket were near the bottom of the division and it was obvious from the start the form book wasn''t going to be upset.
Ely took the lead when their big centre half ghosted in at the back post and put away a decent header. The lead was doubled about 10mins later when the same player again evaded marking to lay a clever flick onto a freekick diverting past the stranded keeper. It stayed 0-2 until half time with the vistiors enjoying several other chances and the double scoring centre half squandering a couple of good chances to get an unlikely hat trick.
The home side were a little better early in the 2nd half but were hit on the break and were soon 0-3 down. They did get a penalty but failed to convert after a poor effort from the spot.
As the game wound towards its conclusion the Home side clearly frustrated made several wreckless challenges which were clearly not appreciated by the Ely bench. The game stayed 0-3 and Ely jumped to the top of the division.
Newmarket''s ground was ok fairly basic but pretty standard for the level. Another Ridgeons Prem team off the list and probably going to see Ely again on Tuesday when they host 2nd place Wroxham at home.
