Jefferson Louis created a little slice of history by scoring Newport County’s first goal at Rodney Parade for some 72 years, as League Two outfit Bristol Rovers were put to the sword on a sweltering evening at the Exiles’ new home. Even though football was perhaps secondary to the occasion, County nevertheless embraced their plush surroundings by treating the crowd to a neat passing brand of football, a cultured style severely lacking last season at Spytty.
Near neighbours Rovers fielded a full-strength side in what was County’s most competitive friendly outing to date. In the absence of Alan Julian, trialist keeper Joe Perry kept his place between the sticks whilst youngster Lee Evans was given a starting berth on the day he reached adulthood. Either side might have scored early doors as the game pleasingly switched from end-to-end: home striker Danny Crow coming closer than anybody when his dipping shot on 11 minutes struck the top of the crossbar. Perry too had to be alert, atoning for his own error when saving well from Richards.
The goal that the sun-drenched crowd had craved duly arrived on 31 minutes, the fruit of a delicious team move. A majestic cross-field pass from Crow allowed former Gas full-back David Pipe to combine sweetly with Max Porter down the right flank, before Jefferson Louis added the finishing sparkle with a well-placed looping header.
As one might expect, the visitors cranked it up a notch after the break, with winger Mustapha Carayol in particular asking many a question of the resolute County defence. On more than one occasion Perry had to come to the rescue before an historic evening was crowned in style two minutes from time with a second Newport goal: substitute Ryan Charles rounding keeper Conor Gough before his jab goalwards was turned home by Kris Fielden. The icing on the cake of a perfect start at County’s new home.
