Welling came away from Park View Road with a hard fought 2-2 draw against play-off rivals Sutton United.
The away side were a class above in the first half and should have had a healthier lead then 1-0 thanks to Harry Beautyman. Welling responded well and equalised through a Joe Healy penalty but Harry Baker missed his spotkick a minute later. Substitute Jon Main scored his first goal for Welling to make it 2-1 but fellow Sutton substitute Kyle Vassell equalised to make the final score 2-2.
Theo Fairweather-Johnson replaced Jon Main up front and Joe Healy returned from illness to replace Scott Kinch. Loui Fazakerley also shrugged off a knock picked up against Tonbridge Angels to keep his place at right back.
Sutton got off to the perfect start taking the lead after just five minutes as Fazakerley failed to get good enough contact on a challenge on Sam Rent’s whose dragged ball across the box bisected the Wings’ defence and was finished off by skipper Harry Beautyman.
Welling were in trouble again as Ibe beat the offside trap from a floated ball over the top but Mott just managed to close the striker down and smother the ball before the trigger was pulled.
The away side continued to outplay Welling on the flanks as both full backs had chances to work Mott. First ex-Wing Anthony Riviere lost his marker on the right only to a unleash a wild shot that went out for a throw in and then Gareth Gwillim should of done better shooting over after good hold play from Nick McCoy in the penalty area.
The majority of the Wings’ attacks were once again coming down the left wing with Baker and Obersteller finding the same amount of space as Sutton when they attacked but lacked the dribble or ball needed to unlock the defence.
When Fairweather-Johnson did find himself through on goal he was just flagged offside. But Sutton once again showed Welling how to stay onside as Ibe was played through by Beautyman on 28 minutes and was denied by an excellent save by Mott with his legs.
Hughes-Mason shot wide on the volley after good work by Fairweather-Johnson but all too often, Welling miss-placed a pass just as they began to put pressure on the U’s.
Repeating a familiar pattern, Beuatyman passed Obersteller all too easily on 35 minutes and Ibe beat the offside trap on the right forcing Mott to tip the ball over the bar. From the corner, veteran Paul Telfer ran in completely un-marked to scuff a shot wide much to the annoyance of Mott.
A couple of minutes before half time, Sutton showed their superiority in the first half with a wonderful passing move which turned the Wings’ defence into statues. Once again Beautyman was the architect holding off pressure from Obersteller and a string of one-twos between Kavanagh and Dundas saw the former shoot hard at Mott who got fingertips to an already rising shot.
By 45 minutes the Welling bench had lost patience with referee David Rock who constantly refused to give free kicks for stiff challenges but in honesty, they would have been happy the deficit was only one goal come the whistle.
Welling switched to a 4-4-2 after the break but a minute into the second half Sutton were almost gifted a goal after Sam Mott spilled a cross into a busy penalty and was thankful Acheampong was on hand to clear the ball into the stands.
From the rebound of their sixth corner, Welling thought they had equalised with five minutes of the second half gone as Acheampong put a bullet header past Scriven but was adjudged to be offside from Healy’s cross.
Kavanagh went close again for Sutton shooting agonizingly wide from a tight angle and after good football by Beautyman, Healy produced a good sliding block to deny McCoy.
Welling finally found some passing magic twice from Harry Baker who first set up Fairweather –Johnson who should have done better and then again to Obersteller on the left. The left back passed to Hughes-Mason in the box and was brought down going away from goal for the penalty. Joe Healy duly converted from the spot to equalise for the Wings after 61 minutes who had visibly sharpened up after the break. Hughes-Mason was immediately substituted by Jon Main after the goal.
A minute later Baker was at it again, chipping a lofted ball over the top with three Welling players through on goal. Main was the man to collect the ball and was brought down by Scriven for a second penalty in a minute despite Sutton’s fierce protests. But Baker couldn’t produce one last bit of magic as his spot kick was saved by a visibly angry Scriven.
Welling were now playing by far the better football and Fairweather-Johnson and Baker combined brilliantly in the box to set up the striker but Scriven was once again there to deny the Wings with a good save. The former Dover winger was at the heart of almost every Welling attack as he once again chipped over Sutton’s back four through Main was adjudged offside.
Sutton responded from a corner as Rents struck a vicious shot from the edge of the box but was denied by an outstanding save from the un-sighted Mott. Perhaps surprised that the ball came to him so quickly, Dundas shot over from six yards with an open goal to aim at. Rents was again stopped by Mott from a long range shot two minutes later.
With 71 minutes on the clock, Jon Main showed his class at this level brilliantly knocking the ball past Telfer and then confidently sliding the ball past Scriven giving the Wings a 2-1 lead which had seemed far away at half time but was deserved based on their much improved performance after the break.
Welling should have added a third as twice they failed to latch on to pull backs from the bi-line. First Healy was second best to Stuart after more good work by Baker on the left and from the opposite flank, Fazakerley tried to be too cute with his finish after Main’s good cross.
Sutton made two changes on 80 minutes as Craig Watkins and Kyle Vassell came on and a minute into the action they made a decisive impact. Obersteller miss-judged a long cross field ball to Watkins and the substitute’s cross missed the outstretched hand of Mott and was tucked in by Vassell.
The Sutton subs had galvanised the away side and now looked the most likely to score. Vassell peeled away on the left and his floated cross to the back-post was met by Beautyman but he could only shoot into the side netting. Another Vassel cross found Watkins completely un-marked at the back post but he took too much time to set up his shot and was blocked by Obersteller.
The away side desperately tried to force a last minute winner from a free kick after the Welling bench had been remonstrated for taking their protests against the linesman too far but Stuart could only head over the bar as the final whistle went.
