Salisbury City 4-0 Dorchester Town
SALISBURY CITY recovered from Saturday’s defeat in fine style by thumping Dorchester Town 4-0 at the Ray Mac on Tuesday night to reopen a three point gap at the top of Conference South.
Stuart Sinclair started City’s biggest thrashing of the season with his first goal of the season inside eight minutes and Chris McPhee added a second with a curling shot nine minutes later.
Robbie Matthews collected his 50th goal for the club in the 52nd minute, before McPhee netted a fourth from the spot.
After a quiet opening, the Whites settled into their stride and got off to a perfect start through Sinclair’s neat finish after skipping away from a number of yellow shirts.
Salisbury started to pile on the pressure from then on, and nine minutes later the second was delivered – this time it came from a great passage of play between two players who have caused defences real problems in recent weeks with their great combination.
Sinclair’s delivery was met by McPhee on the edge of the area and he took one touch before curling a beauty into the top corner.
The Magpies, who have enjoyed a good start to the season, didn’t create their first opportunity until the half-hour mark when Mark Jermyn’s cross was blocked at the far post by Willem Puddy.
Both Jamie White and Sinclair had chances to score a fourth and their efforts troubled keeper Jason Matthews.
But in the 52nd minute the three points were firmly in the bag when Matthews’ header landed in the roof of the net.
And as the game died down, the hosts were awarded a penalty inside 78 minutes after Garyn Preen was picked out by Theo Lewis and he sprinted down the left handside and was tripped inside the box.
McPhee approached the spot and scored comfortably to end a great performance.
“It is a real achievement to bounce back from Saturday’s defeat,” said boss Darrell Clarke.
“The boys showed their discipline and willingness to win once again and they got their rewards at the end – they stuck to their guns.
“I love night games at the Ray Mac, which I always enjoyed as a player and now as a manager and we overruled our opponents a bit.
“Not many sides are going to win 46 games, so there’s always going to be time when you’ve got to recover from defeat and show a bit of character.”
The Whites return to Hayes and Yeading on Saturday, this time for a place in the FA Cup Fourth Round Qualifier.
Clarke’s men will remember the Kingfield Stadium well, as they won 3-2 with ten men on there last outing nearly three weeks ago.
Clarke added: “We couldn’t have asked for a more difficult draw. Hayes and Yeading is one of the best footballing sides in the division.
“And although we will go there top of the league and in a confident mood, we’re not underestimating how tough it’s going to be.
“It should be an interesting game.”
