IFA World Cup Qualifier Scotland 1-2 Wales Friday 22 March 2013, kick-off 8pm Hampden Park Hanley 45+1: Ramsey 71 (pen), Robson-Kanu 73 Snodgrass sent off, 71 Ramsey sent off, 90+3 Wales inflicted a 2-1 defeat on ten-man Scotland tonight at Hampden Park to all but end hopes of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil 2014. Scotland took the lead against the run of play on the stroke of half time when Grant Hanley powered home a Charlie Mulgrew corner kick. However Robert Snodgrass received his second yellow card of the match when he brought down Chris Gunter just inside the Scotland box and Aaron Ramsey smashed home the resulting penalty. Hal Robson-Kanu sealed the win with a header two minutes later to leave Scotland rooted to the bottom of Group A with just two points from five games. Scotland’s game plan suffered an early blow when striker Steven Fletcher landed awkwardly on his ankle and had to be stretchered off after just two minutes. Gordon Strachan’s side looked nervous in the opening exchanges of the game with Wales enjoying most of the possession. McGregor almost gifted Wales an early lead when his attempted clearance was blocked by Bellamy but Hanley was on hand to head the danger clear. Moments later, Hanley lost possession to Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Garteth Bale deep inside the Scotland half but he was unable to punish the Scots. It was Scotland, though, who created the first real chance of the match. The busy Shaun Maloney found Chris Burke wide on the right and his cross was met by the head of substitute Kenny Miller but the Vancouver Whitecaps striker could not find the target. Scotland continued to show signs of nervousness when James McArthur lost possession in midfield but Bellamy’s pass into the Scotland penalty box was smothered by McGregor. Bale tried to impose himself on the match on 25 minutes with a shot from distance but McGregor was equal to the strike. Scotland worked hard to get back into the game and Miller was again on the end of a cross, this time from Snodgrass, but once more the ball flew over the crossbar. Scotland took the lead shortly before half time when Charlie Mulgrew’s corner to the back post was headed past Glyn Myhill and into the back of the net. Wales talisman Bale was forced to come off at half time after suffering a knock on his ankle. Dorrans had a pop at goal from 20 yards which went high over Wales goalkeeper Myhill’s cross bar. Snodgrass went closer, hitting the post with an arched shot from the edge of the penalty area. Wales had the ball in the back on the hour mark but referee Antony Gautier blew for a foul on McGregor. The Scotland number one had to be alert to save from a Craig Bellamy free-kick on 69 minutes. But just moment later, Wales were awarded a penalty. Snodgrass received his second yellow card of the game and his marching orders for a tackle on Gunter just inside the Scotland penalty area. Ramsey smashed the ball past McGregor to level the game. Two minutes later, Wales were ahead when Jonathan Williams picked out Robson-Kanu and he headed past McGregor from eight yards. Wales were reduced to ten-men themselves in injury time when Ramsey hauled down McArthur to deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Maloney could only sky the resulting free-kick high over the bar and Wales held out to complete a double over Scotland.
