This was the first football match i ever attended at the age of 13 years and i absolutely loved it. I was hooked from this day onwards. I actually thought i supported Arsenal as they were my mums 1st boyfriends team and somehow i thought that was good enough. I soon realised that you are supposed to support your local side. Living in Eltham, south east London gave me a choice between, Charlton, Millwall, and slightly further Crystal Palace, so really it was a bit of a No Brainer !!!.
I still remember the vastness of the ground which was all terracing and you just leaned on any of the available barriers. In a ground that could hold 75,000 people you could have a barrier each as the crowd would be below 8,000.
I remember the smell of the Hamburgers and the great smell that the programmes have when it is all new to you. I still have the programme as the first in my collection from each ground visited. Would love to get a copy of the ticket, or any Home ticket stub for 1973 to be honest.
Was a season ticket holder from next season onwards for most years and the club paid me back by drawing my ball out on the annual Valley Gold draw in 1996 and gave me a cheque for £20,000 which has in fact covered my season tickets for life.
So a cold day back in 1973 was the start of a fantastic relationship which has outlived two marriages (so far !!!)> I believe the scorer on the day was Derek Hales with a diving header !?.
