The eagerly awaited derby at the RheinEnergieStadion against Alemannia Aachen on Monday night ended in disappointment for the home side. Marius Ebbers scored the decisive goal in the 23rd minute after a defensive error and the visitors went on to win 1-0. Christoph Daum’s men made the brighter start and dominated the early phases of the game against a very defensive Aachen eleven. Cologne had the chance to take the lead after ten minutes but Patrick Helmes effort proved high and wide of Kristian Nicht’s goal. A 50,000 strong crowd were in full support of their side but the offensive efforts of Novakovic, Helmes and Chihi were on the whole ineffective. Attempts to feed the front men in the Aachen box were all too often cleared by Alemannia centre half Alexander Klitzpera.
