Rovers booked their place in the southern area final of the LDV Vans Trophy this evening thanks to a deserved 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient at Brisbane Road.
A strike from Craig Disley within minutes of the second half restart and a late winner from Lewis Haldane overturned a Gary Alexander effort at the end of the opening period, to see the Pirates move just one step away from the Millennium Stadium.
Alexander could have fired Orient into a dream start after only four minutes after the ball dropped to him unmarked inside the Rovers six-yard box, but he somehow managed to direct his effort straight at Ryan Clarke when it would have been easier score than miss.
Rovers responded with a chance for Jamie Forrester that was cleared as a clever dinked effort was aimed towards a waiting Disley, and then Disley himself was causing mayhem in the Orient back line as he skipped past two players before alert goalkeeper Glenn Morris came out to smother the danger.
Forrester then saw an effort from 25 yards saved, before Stuart Campbell got in on the act as well with a shot that was well held by a busy Morris.
Lee Thorpe rattled an impressive effort form 30 yards against the Orient crossbar, before slightly against the run of play the home side edged themselves into a 1-0 lead with only two minutes of the first half remaining.
The goal came after good play from Lee Steele saw him evade the attentions of Disley and Robbie Ryan, before his pass to an unmarked Alexander was fired home past Clarke from around 12 yards out.
Rovers responded in the best way possible at the start of the second half, and were back on level terms within a couple of minutes of the restart.
The lively Disley picked up the ball in midfield before baring down on goal, and as Norris came out in an attempt to deal with the danger, the former Mansfield Town man delicately dinked his shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
James Hunt nearly made it 2-1 to Rovers moments later as his shot was blocked, and then John Anderson appeared to be somewhat fortunate to escape without any punishment at all, as his challenge on Alexander saw the Orient forward brought down when he was almost through one-on-one with Clarke.
Haldane was brought on to freshen up the attack in place of Forrester, and he almost made the perfect introduction as he stretched to touch home a Ryan cross into the box.
Disley hardly troubled Morris with a weak header on goal, although a goalmouth scramble three minutes later saw desperate Orient defending hack the ball away as Thorpe and Haldane both went close to scoring.
Thorpe was again inches away from touching home a cross from Ryan, before in stoppage time at the end of the 90 minutes, substitute Haldane popped up in the right place at the right time to send Rovers through to the area final.
The young striker showed great touch to control the ball with his left foot, before he fired home with his right foot past Morris and into the back of the Orient net.
A late free-kick from Alexander had Rovers fans slightly worried, but the defensive wall did its duties and the rebounding loose ball was cleared away to safety.
It was a deserved win for Rovers who looked the better side for the majority of the game, and only 180 minutes of football now separates Ian Atkins' side from a trip to a showpiece final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium.
