The day after watching PSG play Lens at the Stade de France in front of 70,000 fans, I took the metro to a southern suburb of Paris and watched Paris' 2nd highest placed team on the league ladder. On a beautiful warm and sunny afternoon US Creteil attracted a crowd of 3,700 to see them take on promotion favourites Troyes, who are generally a Ligue 1 side. The attendance may seem surprisingly low, but it was unusually high for this club, who normally average little more than 1,000 for a home match.
The stadium was right next to the metro station, and was in good order, apart from the fine white dust which seemed to have settled on each and every seat. This was odd since both side stands are fully roofed. It is modern and also serves as an athletics track, thus there were no fans at all behind either goal. The stands along the touchlines were all seater cantilever stands with surprisingly good sightlines. Seats were comfortable with good leg room. It was a 'sit-where-you-like' scenario, so I took my seat near the half-way line, half-way up the stand. Great view, and good quality of football, spoiled only by the huge number of schoolkids sitting around me, and generally enjoying themselves without actually watching the match. So that's why the crowd was so much larger than usual - kids for a quid? More likely kids for nothing! Still, I shouldn't complain. My seat cost me £6.40. Considering it costs around £10 to see my local 6th tier team, Solihull Moors, I thought this was amazing value for money.
By the way, former Hammers Frederic Piquionne and Herita Ilunga were in the Creteil line-up, and they were set for a valuable three points until Gregory Nivet headed in a last minute equaliser for Troyes.
