Santos, Baroka and the mystery goal.
Sunday 22 August 2015, the opening day of the 2015/16 National First Division season will long be forgotten come the end of the season. But jostling for position at the end of the season , as it has become customary in the lower leagues, will all likelihood thrust this date into the limelight.
On that day Santos were credited with a controversial goal against Baroka For at Athlone stadium in the Mother City. According to regulations to score a goal, the ball must pass completely over the goal line between the goal posts and under the crossbar and no rules may be violated on the play. Due to inadequate coverage of games in the NFD, it is difficult to tell if the goal was legitimate or not, but nonetheless it stands according to official records. This was in spite of remonstrations by Baroka players who went as far as trying to ascertain if the net had holes.
Surprisingly the sport channels have conveniently turned a blind eye on the debacle. Inferences were made to the goal during some programmes, but by and large the media has steered clear of the issue. Knowing the importance of a single goal in the league standings it would be prudent for the league to resolve the issue before it becomes a problem at culmination of the season.
