GATESHEAD maintained their 100% record away from home as Danny Johnson’s brace saw off newly-promoted Guiseley.
Johnson – making his first start for the Heed since the opening day of the season – found the net with two confident finishes either side of the break.
The Tynesiders move into the top-five of the Vanarama National League as a result, with mid-table Lincoln City next up at the International Stadium on Monday.
For over half-an-hour at Nethermoor Park, however, it was a backs-to-the-wall effort for Malcolm Crosby’s side.
Following on from a 4-0 defeat at home to Aldershot Town a week ago, the Lions came out roaring, and almost took the lead four minutes in, as Zac Thompson’s first-time strike from just inside the penalty area was tipped wide by Sam Russell.
Guiseley then peppered the Tynesiders’ goalmouth with half-a-dozen corners in succession, only to find centre-back pairing Ben Clark and James Curtis in fine form.
Winger Wayne Brooksby then saw two quick-fire efforts blocked, the first by Jordan Cranston, the second by Clark.
Nicky Boshell stung the palms of Russell with a sweetly-struck free-kick from 25 yards, before curling a second-set piece high of the target just minutes later.
The impressive Russell then had to be tuned-in to keep out Will Hatfield’s deceptive cross-come-shot, before the Heed drew first blood against the run of play.
After being picked out by Simon Ramsden's floated pass, Ryan Bowman flicked the ball on for Johnson to give chase, with the forward calmly firing beyond the Lions’ Dan Atkinson to register his first competitive goal for the club.
And two minutes after the break, Johnson got the better of the Guiseley stopper again.
After gathering the ball in midfield, Josh Gillies powered towards the edge of the area and set Johnson in on goal, with the frontman making no mistake from eight yards out.
Shell-shocked, the hosts took their time to respond, but on the hour-mark, they called the superb Russell into action again.
Hatfield was the architect, firstly bringing the best out of the Gateshead stopper with a vicious left-footed effort, before lifting the ball wastefully over the crossbar from close-range.
Sensing a hat-trick, Johnson took aim again midway through the second-half, seeing an 18-yard strike blocked by the Lions’ Danny Lowe.
Former Tynesider Adam Boyes squandered a decent opportunity for the home side 15 minutes from time, nodding Brooksby’s cross wide of the far post from an unmarked position.
The Heed rearguard continued to be tested in the closing stages, with Clark doing well to block a Liam Dickinson effort, and Russell equal to Boyes’ low strike from eight yards out.
