JUNE 12, 1988: ENGLAND 0-1 IRELAND, EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS, NECKARSTADION, STUTTGART Ireland fans were already in dreamland after reaching Euro 88, their first major finals, under Jack Charlton. But when Ray Houghton’s sixth-minute header looped beyond Peter Shilton the throngs of green and white and gold went completely delirious in Stuttgart. In the ensuing backs-to-the-wall Irish rearguard, Paul McGrath and keeper Packie Bonner excelled to deny England a deserved equaliser. Grown men cried at the final whistle but despite the wild Irish celebrations, Charlton’s troops – like Bobby Robson’s boys – ultimately failed to reach the knockout stages as Holland and the USSR marched on. England XI: Peter Shilton: Gary Stevens, Mark Wright, Tony Adams, Kenny, Sansom, Chris Waddle, Neil Webb, Bryan Robson, John Barnes, Peter Beardsley, Gary Lineker. Ireland XI: Packie Bonner, Chris Morris, Mick McCarthy, Kevin Moran, Chris Hughton, Ray Houghton, Paul McGrath, Ronnie Whelan, Tony Galvin, Frank Stapleton, John Aldridge.
