Rovers came from a goal down to win 3-1 at Brunton Park this afternoon, as Paul Trollope's new-look side turned on the style against Carlisle United.
The Cumbrians were ahead after just seven minutes of the contest, and seemingly on their way to victory after a strong opening period.
But a tremendous second half performance from Rovers saw a complete turnaround in fortunes, with two own goals and a late Junior Agogo effort wrapping up an emphatic and thoroughly deserved three points for the visitors.
Carlisle dominated the opening ten minutes of the match, and put together a series of corners that had Rovers penned back.
Aaron Lescott needed to be alert to hack the ball away off the line, and Scott Shearer did well as he punched clear two in-swinging corners that had threatened to cause mayhem in the Rovers defence.
The opening goal of the game came on seven minutes after an unfortunate slip from Craig Hinton allowed Alan O'Brien a clear run on goal, and after charging down one-on-one with Shearer from 35 yards, he calmly slotted the ball home past the goalkeeper from just inside the penalty area.
After finding themselves a goal down Rovers slowly began to claw their way back into the match, as first of all Michael Leary saw a shot from 25 yards blocked, and a fine move involving Richard Walker, Craig Disley and Agogo came close to producing an equaliser, only for a dubious offside flag to scupper the opportunity.
Adam Murray tried his luck with an overhead kick from eight yards out that didn't trouble Shearer as the ball sailed high and wide, and Peter Murphy was similarly off-target as he blazed a hopeful effort six yards the wrong side of the post.
Walker and Agogo combined superbly on the edge of the Carlisle box before the former saw a left-footed shot well saved by Kieran Westwood, and Walker was involved again moments later as he attempted to hook a spectacular effort into the corner of the goal from a tight angle, only to see the ball creep just inches wide.
Rovers started the second half as they finished the first, by pinning back their hosts and enjoying long spells of concerted pressure.
Walker should have done better as he headed narrowly wide from a free header after a terrific Agogo ball into the box, and then Leary was denied after being played in by Walker, after some desperate Carlisle defending in their own penalty box.
Agogo should have played in an unmarked Disley after Hunt had teed up the striker with a great pass from midfield, only for the striker to keep his head down and shoot wide, but just a few minutes later Rovers were back on level terms thanks to the first own goal of the afternoon.
It came after a delightful Ali Gibb ball into the box from out wide was chased by Agogo, and as the striker stretched his leg in an attempt to prod home, the ball appeared to strike Westwood and then defender Danny Livesey before nestling in the back of the net.
Disley and Walker went close with shots inside the box as Rovers chased the lead, and Agogo was unlucky as he placed a header from seven yards out over the crossbar after great wing play down the right side from Gibb.
Agogo was at his best moments later as he evaded two Carlisle players before sending a ball into the box that somehow appeared to roll along the top of the crossbar, before being hacked away to safety by a defender.
Continued Rovers pressure eventually saw the away side rewarded with the goal they'd been looking for, although the last touch once again came off of a Carlisle player.
A Hunt pass to Walker was played into Agogo, and although his shot on goal may have been creeping wide, an outstretched foot from Zigor Aranalde ensured the ball diverted into the corner of the goal.
Walker looked to make it three as a curling left-footed shot sailed just wide of the target, before the points were wrapped up in stoppage time as a ball over the top to Agogo saw the striker beat Westwood for pace, and his delicate dink over the shot-stopper made it 3-1.
Yet more progress from Rovers under the guidance of Paul Trollope, and one of the most encouraging away displays for some time.
Sustained spells of pressure, and slick confident attacking football from the visitors was a pleasure to watch, and the travelling army of Gasheads went home having seen a thoroughly deserved victory for their side.
