The most unusual thing I noticed about Bloomfield Rd is that from the outside it looks more like it could be a hotel complex or a concert venue. No visible signs of the floodlights, as at most grounds, and the only obvious signs are the well stocked club shop and the Blackpool Football Club crests which adorn 2 pilllars near to the turnstiles. I have since discovered that there IS in fact a hotel which forms part of the stadium (the Armfield end) and some of the rooms overlook the pitch itself. You learn something new every day! The first thing the away fan needs is a ticket. These are dispensed from what appears to be an old modified shipping container at the back of the the North stand in Field St. Unusual, but these are the sorts of things that make me smile about football. It''s not all about the Big Boys. On two corners outside the ground are statues of Blackpool legends Jimmy Armfield and Stan Mortensen (no Stanley Matthews which was strange). The inside of the stadium is very impressive. Bloomfield Rd is an all covered, all seated stadium holding roughly 17000 spectators in their bright tangerine coloured plastic seats. The stands are all single tier. The two stands behind either goal - the Armfield stand and the North stand, and the Stanley Matthews (or West stand) are of the same height and are covered by one continuous cantilevered roof. The East stand is slightly lower. The seating is set fully into all corners giving it a very enclosed and compact look. The Stanley Matthews stand also houses executive and hospitality boxes, which run the length of the back of the stand, and the players dressing rooms and tunnel. Prior to the game though, what now appears to be a regular protest by Blackpool fans against the club owners the Oystons was taking place. About a hundred had gathered underneath the window of their executive offices. Banners waved and megaphones were used to urge the owners to sell the club. Good on em. Wealthy business men who buy football clubs need to be fully aware that, for the fans, it''s not all about money. Its not all about building mega- stadiums. For the fans a club has a soul and a history and spirit which money can''t buy. Who else would go to their club on a miserable, rainy, freezing cold Tuesday night in January to watch their team, knowing full well they''re probably going to lose, apart from a footy fan? Good Luck Blackpool fans. Due to these on-going protests, many Blackpool fans are boycotting games. As such a crowd of just over 1900, 900 of whom were Harriers fans, watched the game. Both sets of fans were housed in seperate sections of the Stanley Matthews stand. I presume this was to make stewarding the game easier, but it was a strange sight looking out to 3 empty stand. It would have made more sense to house us behind either goal. At least we would''ve been able to see each other! Kidderminster were hoping for one of their cup giant-killing acts over the boys from League 2. In 1994 Harriers beat Birmingham City and Preston North End before losing 1-0 at home to West Ham in front of 8,000 fans (I know, cos I was there). In recent seasons they''ve beaten Newport County, Peterborough and lost narrowly away to Sunderland, so they know all about cup ties. The 900 travelling Red and White Army were their usual vocal selves but unfortunately the difference in class between the two teams was very obvious, to such an extent that the Harriers barely had a shot worth mentioning as they were closed out of every position on the pitch. The game was over and done in the first half with goals by former Harriers man Jamille Matt and Brad Potts. All round though an enjoyable Sunday out in a very nice stadium. I hope Blackpools problems are resolved and that they get the crowds their football deserves.
End of season 16/17- Blackpool finished 7th with 70 points. They went on to beat Exeter City 2-1 in the League Two Play Off final at Wembley and will play League One football in 17/18.
