NOTTINGHAM FOREST LEEDS UNITED Gerrard Neil Sullivan Louis-Jean Gary Kelly Morgan Paul Butler Doig Wright (sub 65) Curtis (sub 28) David Healy (sub 78) James (sub 90) Danny Pugh Perch Frazer Richardson (sub 8) Thompson Walton Gardner Aaron Lennon Bopp (sub 56) Matthew Kilgallon Taylor Rob Hulse Kris Commons (sub 56) Clarke Carlisle (sub 8) Doyle Kevin Pressman Beaumont Einarsson Harris (sub 90) Johnson (sub 65) Robertson (sub 28) Brian Deane (sub 78) As if Gary Megson didn''t have enough worries, with more injuries picked up at the weekend, the squad was hit this week by a virus. The two factors combined meant that a total of 7 players who played on Saturday were unavailable for selection. Only Commons recovered enough to make it onto the bench. And so it was a point well worth celebrating for the young, spirited Forest side that battled well to keep a clean sheet albeit against a poor Leeds side. And Forest could have won when they were awarded a penalty in the second half, but Sullivan saved substitute Commons'' shot. But they battled on and the determination of the whole side helped to put Saturday''s defeat at Ipswich behind them. The selection available to the manager led him to start with the unusual formation of 4-1-4-1, with Thompson playing behind the back four and Taylor alone at the front. It was a positive start from Forest and in the sixth minute James did well to beat his man and keep the ball from going out. He managed to get the ball into the box and across to Gardner but he was quickly surrounded before being able to get a shot in. As Forest continued to look lively Perch produced a good cross to James at the back post but he couldn''t quite stretch enough to reach the ball. And then Bopp linked up well with Curtis who cut in and shot on target, forcing Sullivan to dive to his left and make the save. Perch took his chance when he found the ball at his feet amongst a crowd of players and from over 20 yards out his effort forced Sullivan to dive low to his left to make the save. The Forest side got even younger when Curtis was forced to come off and Robertson took his place. But youthful enthusiasm continued to win out and Forest again put the Leeds goal under pressure with James finally sending the ball high over the bar after good efforts from Bopp and Perch. Just before half time James made a terrific run down the right and forced himself past two Leeds players and into the box. He crossed to the far post but Taylor had no chance of heading the ball back towards goal. Forest nearly scored in the second minute of the second half when Robertson made a run down the left and sent an excellent cross into the box. Taylor''s diving header crashed against the corner of the bar. Leeds, who had played very poorly during the first half put some pressure on Gerrard''s goal during the early stages of the half but still failed to find the target. Commons came on for Bopp and hadn''t been playing for many minutes before he needed treatment, just sitting down on the half way line without a Leeds player near him. But fortunately he was able to carry on. Forest were awarded a penalty in the 70th minute when Commons made a run into the box, got between two Leeds players and was brought down by Kelly as he went clear on goal. The City Ground crowd were disappointed that he only received a yellow card and to the further dismay of the crowd Commons slipped as he shot and Sullivan dived the right way to make his fourth penalty save of the season. Just on 90 minutes Commons got the ball away towards Perch who ran forward with the ball and as Sullivan ran a long way out of the box the two collided. Perch didn''t move and the stretchers were very quickly called for as was the club doctor as the player lay motionless. He received a standing ovation as he was stretchered off down the dugout. It was a very sad end to the game for Perch who had undoubtedly been Forest''s star player. Four minutes of stoppage time still remained and as it came towards the end Doig was booked and the referee moved the ball forward 10 yards close to the edge of the penalty area. But it typified Leed''s night when Johnson sent the ball miles high and wide.
