Very very impressive stadium as you approach it form the city centre. It''s very large anyway but with standing on a rise it looked colossal. Impressive inside too, apart from the relative lack of leg-room in my row in the Gallowgate End. Newcastle had 2 pts from 6 league games going into this cup-tie, and Wednesday fielded a virtual 2nd team apparently. Nevertheless they were still too good for the Toon who only woke up in the last 10 minutes, when ex-Ajax striker de Jong, missed two very presentable chances. Mind you Wednesday had an incredible double miss just before that when two players each hit the bar, the second being an almost impossible miss. Good support for both teams. The home fans around me were mostly good-tempered in spite of the poor performance, and there were very few catcalls during the game. However, at the final whistle the boos were the loudest I''ve ever heard at any ground. Mind you they deserved it - too many players were just going through the motions, particularly Moussa Sissoko and Wijnaldum. Anita tried hard throughout, by comparison. Great football memorabilia shop near the ground called The Back Page. Well worth a visit. Plenty of good pubs quite close to the ground. The overall experience lived up to my expectations. I had travelled up from my home in the West Midlands to see both Newcastle and Sunderland play at home. This happened on successive nights thanks to the League Cup draw. Enjoyed Newcastle city centre too.
