Comments :
Anyone who thinks the Withdean is a poor ground should have seen this place. Athletics and football don't mix but trying to play football on a cricket ground is hopeless. The only other one in recent times was Bramall Lane but there were several in the early days. There were temporary stepped platforms along the touchline nearest the square and the uncovered terracing at one end angled away to fit the shape of the cricket ground. Worse still, the main stand had been either demolished or greatly reduced so that there were only about 400 seats.   In the cricket season cars were parked on the football pitch which was outside the boundary. This did nothing for skilful football and probably explained Northampton's reputation at the time for being rather robust.   Thankfully it was all to change, albeit five years in the future
